Kites
The Kites are part of a larger ongoing series begun in 2015, Triangles/Tondos/Triptychs. Triangles were a frequent compositional element in my paintings. I often worked with a triptych format. I began experimenting with making small paintings in the shape equilateral, isosceles, and scalene triangles, in different sizes. As I cut the triangles out, and put them together, they began to suggest kite shapes. I also saw that when triangles are combined, they can give the illusion of a three-dimensional form. When shown in galleries, they are often hung as triptychs.
I was invited by the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company to collaborate on a performance at The Egg Theatre, Empire State Plaza, Albany, NY. Five kites were selected and projected on the back of the stage behind the dancers for a performance of Boundary Behavior. This was a second collaboration with the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company at The Egg, the first was Synesthesia, a program of five dances, each with a different painting projected.
